Mental toughness means having the ability to keep going under adverse conditions. How do you get it? Mental toughness requires many skills, but one of the most important is setting clear short-term goals and specific strategies to achieve them. To do this, write down a goal you think you can reach in two weeks, then list specific things you need to do to reach it. For instance, suppose you want to increase your training load but have trouble waking up early enough to do it. You might make a goal to strength train one hour twice a week and do specific rides or runs three times a week for the next two weeks, and move your alarm clock to the far side of the room to make sure you'll get up in the morning.
